Hamina we’re close to perfect in June, winning 6 out of 7 games, placing them comfortably at the top of the Southern block. The only loss came in a narrow defeat to the Northern block’s top team Kajaani.
The team continued their successful run from May and had a winning streak of 8 games before being defeated by Kajaani. Hamina’s first game in June saw the orange shirts travel to Mynämäki to face the recently relegated side. Despite Hamina winning the first jakso, this was yet another game that led to a scoring contest. Hamina had no trouble in scoring, with Taru Toikka blasting a 2 run home run to secure the win.
Hamina’s road trip continued with another 4 away games, taking away 11 out of 12 points. Despite a close first jakso against Jana, Hamina went from strength to strength, with 3 solid wins before facing Pesä Ysit. Despite Lappeenranta scoring first in the first jakso, Hamina came back to score 4 runs, mostly involving Niina Nukarinen. But the second jakso seemed to slip away from the orange shirts, as Pesä Ysit took a 2-1 lead in the second inning. A run off the bat of Piitu Saarinen was enough to secure the win for Hamina, but the full 3 points were not taken.
Hamina’s homecoming was spoilt by Northern block leaders Kajaani. The first jakso was tense, with Hamina coming from behind to tie the score 1-1. But in the end it was the visitors who snatched the victory with 2 runs in the second jakso. Kajaani’s opening run in the first jakso came from a walk, leaving fans to wonder - what could have been if there wasn’t a bad pitch in the first jakso.
After the team’s disappointing narrow defeat to Kajaani, Hamina put the experience in the back of their minds and gave a dazzling performance against Pesä Ysit before the midsummer break. Hamina scored 15 runs in the 2 jakso, with 29 third base situations, compared to Lappeenranta’s 8. Taru Toikka claimed an impressive 5 RBIs from 6 attempts and Tytti Bertling opened the second jakso with a solo home run.
Taru Toikka Currently has the most RBIs for Hamina (and the 3rd best in the league) with 1 home run and 21 RBIs from 12 games. But Hamina also have 2 other players in the top 10 in the league; Niina Nukarinen (5th - with 3 home runs and 16 RBIs) and Anniina Salo (9th - with 1 home run and 15 RBIs).
Pinja Kesti remains at the top of the league for the most runs scored, with 22 in May and June combined. Linda Kemppainen and Niina Nukarinen also feature in the top 10 with 16 and 15 runs.
Niina Nukarinen continues to lead the team with the most successful hits when advancing the point runner, with 65 so far this season. Nukarinen’s success rating remains consistent, at of 69.89%.
Position in the league
Hamina remain at the top of the Southern block after 12 games with 26 points. The orange shirts finished June with an impressive 6 point lead over second place Pori in the Southern block. As Pori are not eligible to reach the postseason, this means that Hamina have an 8 point lead over the next team that can make challenge for a playoff spot.
Wasted scoring opportunities have stopped Hamina from reaching their true potential as the start to the season has brought a mixture of success and defeat.
The opening game of the season saw Hamina travel to Kouvola but return empty handed. KPL had the game under control thanks to Elias Pitkänen, who spent some time pitching for Hamina last year whilst on loan from KPL. Pitkänen disrupted Hamina’s offence, meaning that the orange shirts only managed to score 2 runs from 16 3rd base situations.
Hamina’s first home game of the season however was completely different and the team had no difficulty in scoring against Loimaa - out scoring the visitors 13 runs to 2. Hamina’s next game was a home fixture against Haapajärvi, where the orange shirts picked up 3 points and had a perfect defensive performance and conceded no runs.
Hamina’s fourth game of May almost slipped away from them, having to come from behind in the second jakso to force a supervuoro against APV. Hamina had wasted chances in the first jakso and APV jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second jakso. The orange shirts remained focussed and pulled the game back to secure the win and 2 valuable points. The statistics were staggering - Hamina had 28 3rd base situations compared to APV’s 11, yet Hamina only scored 9 runs compared to APV’s 7.
The last game of the month was a disappointing loss to Alajärvi, with the team conceding 12 runs and losing both jakso. Hamina struggled in each area of the game, but a number of key players remain unavailable until later in June due to military service.
Elias Lahti has been a constant threat as pitcher, but errors in fielding have disrupted his performance on occasions. Lahti has also been consistent when batting, with 16 successful hits at moving the point runner from 2nd base to 3rd base - second in the league behind KPL’s pitcher Elias Pitkänen. The problem however has been that the team cannot capitalise on their chances, scoring only 27 runs from 91 third base situations in May - a success rate of just 29.67%
Juha Leskinen scored 12 RBIs in May and led Hamina’s offence by some margin. The next best player was Lassi Vuorela with 6 RBIs. Leskinen’s statistics however have suffered as a result of 25 unsuccessful attempts to bring the runner home from 3rd base, giving him a disappointing 32.43% success rate.
Henri Heikkilä leads the team with 8 runs in the first 5 games of the season, but Nino Muuruvirta is close behind with 7. In fact, both players also lead the team in terms of successful hits - Henri had 32 hits in May and an impressive 91.43% success rate, Nino also had 32 hits and an equally solid 82.05% success rate.
One exciting development in May was the news that Justus Niemeläinen joined Hamina on loan from Joensuu on a game by game basis. Niemeläinen is a solid defensive player and is an asset in the outfield. At bat, Niemeläinen offers another fast running option and is the only player on the team with home run so far this season.
Position in the league
Hamina sit in the top 4, with 8 points from 5 games and are on track for a place in the playoffs. In reality the team expects to win more games in the coming months, as players become available from military service. Lippo remain firmly at the top of the league, but they have had a fairly easy schedule to start the season, with their toughest opponent being Alajärvi (who they beat in a scoring contest).
Hamina suffered 2 defeats in scoring contests before managing to get their season going. The orange shirts now end the month with back to back wins at home against league leading opponents.
The start to the regular season was frustrating, with the first 3 games ending in a scoring contest. The challenge for Hamina has been to find consistency across both jakso, something the team finally achieved on 28th May against Lappajärvi. The end of the month also saw Superpesis talent Reetta Juntonen join the lineup, on loan from Joensuu for a week.
Hamina’s home opener ended in a narrow defeat after a disastrous first jakso that ended 0-6 to Pesäkarhut. Hamina eased past the visitors in the second jakso 7-1 but ultimately lost in the scoring contest. It was looking grim for Hamina’s start to the season until they earned their first win at Pori, edging the home side in their third scoring contest in three games.
The weekend of 28th May promised some exciting pesis at Vallikenttä, with two games in two days against the teams at the top of Ykköspesis’ North and South blocks. Saturday started with Hamina’s offence exploding to a 15-3 lead in the first jakso against Lappajärvi. Despite the visitors coming back to lead the second jakso 1-2, Hamina pulled it back and won 3-2 to secure their first 3 point win of the season.
The Sunday game brought another 3 points to Hamina’s total, as the orange shirts fought a tight defensive game against Jalasjärvi. Ultimately Hamina shut down JaJa’s offence and left the visitors scoreless across the two jakso. This was a particularly impressive result given the fact that Jalasjärvi had scored 34 runs in just 3 games going into this game.
Anniina Salo currently has the most RBIs for Hamina (and the 3rd best in the league) with 1 home run and 9 RBIs. Anniina also has an impressive 56% success rate with runners on 3rd base. When you consider that the home run and 6 RBIs were from the last 2 games, she is clearly a player who is on a hot streak and worth watching as the season progresses. It is also worth noting that there have been 7 home runs for Hamina in just 5 games! With Petra Laakkonen scoring 2 of them.
Linda Kemppainen and Pinja Kesti lead the league for the most runs scored, with 8 each from the 5 games in May. Niina Nukarinen has had 27 successful hits when advancing the point runner and a success rating of 69.23%. Niina is currently 3rd in the league for successful hits, but leads the league with 70 hits overall.
Position in the league
Hamina sit at the top of the Southern block after 5 games with 10 points. So far this season Hamina have scored points in all of their games, although they would have been hoping for more in their opening games. Pesäkarhut are 2 points behind and JaJa and Laitila are next with 7 points each.
